Independent power producer, Africa REN, has commissioned a 20MW of solar PV power plant with a 10MW/20MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Senegal. Named the Walo Storage project, it marks West Africa’s first solar installation with dedicated energy storage for frequency regulation.
[pdf] The battery system will have a discharge capacity of 38 MW and a storage capacity of up to 70.8 MWh, designed to operate for around twenty years. An environmental assessment is required because the investor, the local company Funicula, plans to develop the site as a standalone solar power plant.
[pdf] Spearheaded by Terra-Gen, this behemoth stands in California, USA, as the largest battery storage system worldwide, boasting an impressive 875 MW / 3,287 MWh across 4,600 acres. Launched in 2021, it utilizes 1.9 million solar modules and over 120,000 batteries.
